Amabilis Singers

New Westminster, B.C., Canada

History

The Amabilis Singers were originally formed in 1981 as The Douglas College Community Choir, becoming an independent community choir in 1989. Over its long history, the choir has fluctuated in size from well over 120 to (a much more manageable!) 55.

Although based in New Westminster, the choir is made up of singers from all around the Lower Mainland and from all walks of life. The Amabilis Singers perform music from many musical periods and in many genres, from a cappella folksongs to large works with local amateur orchestras.

Upon the retirement of Founder/Director Diane Loomer in 1996, Anne Wilson Unger took over and continued as conductor for a happy and successful decade.

Ramona Luengen became the conductor of the Amabilis Singers in September 2006, having had the unforgettable experience of conducting this enthusiastic, generous and hard-working bunch for six months over a decade earlier. With the third conductor in the choir’s history now having completed several seasons, it has been noted that the Sweat and Toil period is well in hand.
