LOVE CAME DOWN AT CHRISTMAS
2:00pm Saturday, December 15, 2012
New Westminster Christian Reform Church, Burnaby
Amabilis invites you to a special afternoon concert celebrating the joyful magic of the Christmas season. Come, be moved by the sumptuous Lulla, Lulla, Lullay by the young Belfast composer Philip Stopford, the delicately transformed In the Bleak Midwinter by the equally youthful and talented American composer Abbie Betinis, the achingly beautiful Love Came Down at Christmas by Edwin Fissinger, along with works by Allan Pote and Dan Forrest.
But there’s even more in store for you! What’s Christmas without Handel’s Messiah, we’ve heard you ask? In response, Amabilis will present a distinctively unique, orchestra-free (and thus budget-friendly), brilliantly entertaining mini-version of this Baroque masterpiece, arranged by the incomparable Vancouver musician, Paul Nash.

THE BACH PROJECT
8:00pm Saturday, May 4, 2013
New Westminster Christian Reform Church, Burnaby
The Source
Jesu, meine Freude is the longest of six motets written by J. S. Bach while he was working at St. Thomas Kirche in Leipzig. A perfectly balanced, highly dramatic work, it consists of eleven short movements based on the texts of Johann Franck and St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans.
The Project
Can one intersperse Jesu, meine Freude with music by other composers and make of it an expanded musical interpretation? Is Bach’s music so timeless that it allows itself to be commented upon by composers of the modern era? Will this unorthodox approach enrich Bach’s deep expression of faith for us listeners, underlining the universality of human longing for the comfort of God’s spirit? Can the combination of Bach’s music with that of Buchard, Chilcott, Forrest, Helvey, Johnson and Stroope create a musical kaleidoscope, providing us with a more profound and beautiful view? Come, join us for this unique choral experience that traverses the ages.
